Rosalie Blum

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

Julien Rappeneau’s enchanting directorial debut Rosalie Blum is a warm, witty and impeccably performed drama-comedy about a random encounter that has unexpected and far-reaching consequences. Thirty-something Vincent Machot (indelibly played by Kyan Khojandi) is a hairdresser, like his father before him. Life rotates around work, his overbearing mother who lives in the apartment upstairs, and a womanising cousin constantly trying to set him up. But one morning Vincent experiences a powerful déjà-vu when he meets the gaze of a grocery store clerk, Rosalie Blum (the fabulous Noémie Lvovsky). Intrigued by this mysterious woman, he begins following her… To reveal more would only spoil the surprises of Rappeneau’s ingeniously structured tale, other than to say that a series of coincidences – both hilarious and dramatic – memorably brings together a group of lost souls in a manner reminiscent of Claude Berri’s wonderful Hunting and Gathering.

Chic!

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

Seamless and sleek, Chic! is a hilarious and romantic romp that tears through the fabric of the Parisian fashion world and will have audiences in stitches. Superstar Fanny Ardant shows off her gift for larger than-life comedy as Alicia Ricosi, an iconic designer and colossal drama queen. Bereft of inspiration following a break-up, the only thing between her and a disastrous show is the savoir-faire of high-powered corporate Hélène (Marina Hands, seen in the hit racing drama Jappeloup – Festival 2014). Career-saving romance for Alicia beckons with the arrival of gardener Julien (César Award winner for Gainsbourg, Éric Élmosnino) – but what if Julien melts the ice cold heart of Hélène as well? Supremely stylish and polished, Chic! boasts the brilliant talents of writer Jean-Paul Bethany and director Jérôme Cornuau, filmed in stunning locations around Paris and Brittany. This is a film that manages to both poke fun at and revel in the nerve-wracking thrill of the catwalk scene, with Ardant’s sublimely funny performance a true tour de force.

The Wait (L'attente)

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche gives one of the finest performances of her career in this dazzling debut feature from wunderkind Piero Messina, who previously worked as the assistant director on Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar winning The Great Beauty. In a beautiful Sicilian villa, Anna (Binoche) receives an unexpected guest. Twenty-something Jeanne (Lou de Laâge, Breathe – Festival 2015) has arrived from Paris, declaring herself to be the girlfriend of Anna’s son, Giuseppe, who has invited her to spend Easter together. But this is news to Anna, and Giuseppe is not yet there. Despite the disruption, Anna invites her to stay, and as the two women await Giuseppe’s arrival, they begin to form a connection. Jeanne gives in to the charms of the island, while Anna comes out of her shell. Yet her son’s absence remains unexplained… Stunningly shot and performed against a spectacular backdrop, Messina and his brilliant leads navigate a complex range of emotions in this entrancing tale of two women from different generations. Courted (L'hermine)

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

Borgen television star Sidse Babett Knudsen and revered actor Fabrice Luchini (Gemma Bovery – Festival 2015, Cycling with Molière – Festival 2014) combine their immense talents in this intriguing blend of courtroom drama and suppressed romance. Luchini brings his instantly recognisable brand of irascible comic weariness to the role of severe judge Xavier Racine, presiding in a country court over a tragic murder case. He recognises jury member Ditte (Knudsen) as the anaesthetist he fell in love with several years before and, breaking with protocol, he connects with her outside. In wistful contemplative dialogue scenes, the judge softens his heart as they recall a past of missed opportunities, all while revelations of the murder unfold. Fluently directed by Christian Vincent, of such classics as La Séparation and Haute Cuisine (Festival 2013), the film manages to be both grittily realistic and gently thoughtful. Courted was selected for competition in the Venice International Film Festival in 2015, and now Australian audiences can enjoy the opportunity of watching these two masterful performers reach into the depths of their characters with subtlety and humour.

First Growth (Premiers Crus)

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

Bursting with sumptuous cinematography of the vineyards of Burgundy, an assured cast and a feel-good script, First Growth is vintage French film-making about the art of making wine. The story concerns Charlie, the son of a wine grower who left his vineyard home to become a renowned Parisian oenologist and the author of a hugely successful wine guide. When Charlie returns to help his family’s failing enterprise he struggles with temperamental weather, a delicate grape and the doubts of his father (Gérard Lanvin, Get Well Soon – Festival 2015). Can the wine critic become a wine producer? This is a delightful and rewarding film from director Jérôme Le Maire, which lovingly captures today’s professional world of winemaking and the challenges each new generation must face. Lanvin is particularly affecting as the gruff patriarch who has become disillusioned with wine. A well-made film with lots of body and a perfect finish, First Growth is a film to be enjoyed with friends.

Dheepan

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

Dheepan is a major film event and the winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2015. This blistering slice of realism, entrenches director Jacques Audiard’s status as one of today’s greatest auteurs, with a unique presentation of the asylum seeker experience that will move audiences profoundly. Three strangers in conflict-ridden northern Sri Lanka band together as a makeshift family in order to flee to the suburbs of Paris: Dheepan, an ex-Tamil Tiger (Antonythasan Jesuthasan, author, activist, and former child soldier); lost young woman Yalini (Kalieaswari Srinivasan); and orphan girl Illayaal (Claudine Vinasithamby). As they struggle to find stability, they are forced to improvise their relationships. Soon they find they must cope with new violence and intolerance in their adopted home. Based on Antonythasan’s own experience, his journey of self-realisation is a powerful and visceral tale, told with a timeless classicism that marks the finest world cinema. As in A Prophet and Rust and Bone, director Audiard orchestrates creeping menace with an emotional punch and a complex social message.

Dujardin plays a cynical film composer, Antoine, who has been sent to Mumbai to score a high-profile Bollywood project. When he meets the Ambassador’s wife, Anna (Zylberstein), he is drawn into a new world of spirituality and living for the moment. Handa Opera On Sydney Harbour: TURANDOT

ONE SCREENING ONLY - SUNDAY 4th SEPTEMBER

In 2016, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour presents Turandot: a story of a death-marked love told with salt in the air, light on the sails and the city skyline reflected in your glass. It's the best of Sydney in a single evening: singing, sunsets and sparkling wine, in perfect harmony. Join us at the water’s edge in a pop-up opera house with purpose-built bars, restaurants and a grandstand under the stars. Chinese director Chen Shi-Zheng's take on this Chinese fable will be one for the history books. As a child of the Cultural Revolution, Chen Shi-Zheng grew up in a China where cruelty and beauty coexisted. Taken in by a Chinese opera troupe, he grew up surrounded by music, but witnessed great suffering. It’s a duality he finds utterly compelling, and a juxtaposition that ties in perfectly with the ice-hearted, impossibly beautiful princess at the heart of Puccini's Turandot. As a director, his work forms a bridge between Chinese and Western artistic approaches, drawing on the Hollywood film tradition, theatrical acrobatics and traditional Chinese opera to create works that thrill visually and cut to the heart.
